Transaction "ABEND"

Occasionally, when pressing ENTER or one of the F (function) keys in PMIS or Payroll, instead of getting a normal screen response, a string of data appears on the screen that contains the word ABEND in the error message.  An example of a possible ABEND message is shown below:

DFS55S1 TRAN PMD105   ABEND SOC7, UG000 ; MSG IN PROCESS: PMD105 2238350474; 92/260 11:49:57
When two lines of data that look similar to this occur on the screen, the transaction that was just attempted has "ABENDED" or experienced an abnormal ending.  When an ABEND occurs on the screen, either PMIS or Central Payroll should be notified immediately.  The appropriate agency to contact is based on the transaction code shown in the error message.  If the transaction code begins with TRAN PM, the agency should contact Anita Newell (733-2992).  Carol Stephenson (981-5542) at Central Payroll should be notified of the ABEND if the transaction code begins with TRAN PX.

Providing PMIS or Central Payroll a description of the transaction being attempted before the ABEND occurred is essential in assisting the programming staff to more quickly determine the nature of the problem and the transaction type that needs to be restarted.  The same transaction should NOT be attempted again before calling PMIS or Central Payroll!  Until the program is fixed, the system will continue to generate ABENDS and everyone in the system that tries to execute the same transaction will receive this message:
 TRAN/LTERM STOPPED
For instance, the ABEND displayed above, was on a PMD105 transaction.  Until the PMD105 transaction was restarted, no PMD105 processing could take place by anyone in the system.
